THE 1960's

TRAMCARS

Now coming back into fashion but in their heyday popular in many British cities. Glasgow had a particularly extensive tramway system. Glasgow's trams lasted from August 1872 until September 2nd 1962 when the last tram ran from Dalmuir to Auchenshuggle.

OFFSHORE RADIO

A phenomenon in the mid 1960's before commercial radio was legalised. For most listeners commercial radio will have meant Radio Luxembourg until March 28th 1964 when Radio Caroline started broadcasting. On 15th August 1967 the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act came into force, and the brief era of pirate radio was extinguished. Radio Sutch broadcast on 1542kHz from 27th May 1964 from the Shivering Sands Fort in the Thames Estuary, eventually becoming Radio City on 299 metres. The Fort was the scene of turbulent times during its spell as a radio station, the station was finally closed after playing the National Anthem just before midnight on 9 February 1967.
